Message from CCC President, August 1st 2010
Here comes the 30th anniversary of Chinese Community Center Newsletter! Please first allow me to take this opportunity and congratulate for the wonderful long march CCC newsletter has gone through. Without any doubt, this achievement had not come with ease. On behalf of the community, I would like to sincerely thank all the previous CCC Newsletter teams for their contribution to keep the publication rolling and growing. Certainly, a special appreciation shall go to the current newsletter editing board under the leadership of Peizhen Xu who has spent thousands of hours of volunteering work behind the scene. If you are reading this article, I believe you would agree with me that Peizhen deserves this special recognition from every one of us! Thank you, Peizhen!
The past three months was very busy as well as fulfilling for the community and our executive team. Here is a brief summary:
2010 Chinese New Year Celebration was held at the Egg in the evening of Feb 13. The sold-out event attracted close to 1,000 attendees across the capital region. Director Chunyuan Zhang and CCC Vice President Yun (David) Dai managed to put forth a magnificent show with the support of about 250 performers, volunteers, and their family members. One more time, we made several TV news channels with our beautiful performances.
On March 6, the first Chinese American Health Fair was successfully organized by the CCC and the local Chinese American Medical Society at the CCC building. The health fair has close to 300 attendees, including many new Chinese populations who had not been very active in the community. This ALL-FREE health fair provided our community members a unique opportunity and access to many health seminars, exhibitions, reading materials, doctor information, as well as one-to-one consultations. I would like to thank all the doctors and medical students who volunteered their much precious time for the good deeds of community. A special appreciation shall go to Dr. Mina Sun, president of local Chinese American Medical Society, for her strong leadership to make everything possible.
The Peifei & Julia LEE library in CCC building has been recently renovated under the leadership of Joy Cheung with the financial support from Dr. Paul Lee, son of late Dr. Lee, and many other Lee’s friends. The library is re-carpeted and renovated into a kids-friendly area and will serve a very important role for CCC Chinese School extracurricular activities and other cultural events. It will open to the CCC members at no cost going forward and hopefully will become a special meeting place for culture programs and children’s learning center. Joy deserves a special credit. The project would not been done so quickly without Joy’s unwavering commitment and influential lobby.
Please join me to thank CCC Music Ensemble group and the CCC Drum Club for their numerous wonderful performances, representing the CCC and our ever-increasingly influential cultures outside the community. Their presence in the local schools, libraries, and other community centers undoubtedly promoted Chinese culture and facilitated exchanges between CCC and the greater society and other minority groups. I am very proud of what they have been doing, as all these exchanges and promotions are strictly consistent with CCC’s mission -- to “foster and enhance the sense of friendship and unity among its community through the cultural and educational programs that we offer and through community service.”
Last but the least, as the 2010 US Census forms are arriving your homes, I want to remind you to take a few minutes completing the forms and sending them back on time. The Census is not only important to the government, but also to our community as well as every one of us. The seemingly boring statistical numbers collected by the Census will ultimately help our community to grow, our strength measured and our culture recognized.
